Distributed Sound Systems

Conference rooms, classrooms, restaurants,

ofﬁ ce buildings, and other commercial facilities

use “Distributed Sound Systems” as an efﬁ cient

means to distribute sound. These systems are

commonly referred to as constant voltage (CV)

systems or 70-volt transformer systems. What

differentiates a “70-volt” from a standard

PA system is that transformers are built

into the speakers, and special ampliﬁ ers

are used to power the speakers properly.

Why use a “70-volt” system?

• Very easy to design

• Economical

• Large numbers of speakers to be chained together in parallel

• Speakers can easily be added and removed

• No need to calculate impedance- just total power

• Higher voltage allows use of smaller gauge wire

Distributed Sound Systems are made up

of the following Components:

1. Source Components - CD players, Tape decks, Tuners, MP3 players, etc.

2. Mixer & Ampliﬁ er - These provide input selection, signal control, and the power to drive speakers

3. Speakers – Two types of speakers are commonly used for ﬁ xed installations: Surface-Mount (external) & Ceiling-Mount (internal)

4. Speaker Wire - Most installations use 18 gauge, two-conductor, stranded, jacketed wire. (There is no need for a shield)

5. Wall-Mounted Volume Controls (Optional) – Allows users to remotely control volume

– Two types of speakers are commonly used for ﬁ xed installations: Surface-Mount (external) & Ceiling-Mount (internal)
